The story behind the story: I helmed this features package at Time Out Chicago, which details the dingiest, wood-paneliest, most authentic dive bars in town (July 19, 2007). This was one of the first issues I put together after being named Editor of Time Out, and it was right after my daughter Maggie was born. So it was a pretty hectic time.
I was no longer at Time Out when the NMA ceremony happened on May 1, 2008, but how many times do you get the chance to hang out with Graydon Carter and Padma Lakshmi? Alas, I didn’t win the award. But I met some good people, drank a lot of champagne, and hung out with some of the cast of 30 Rock (as proven by the photos taken by Huffington Post’s media blogger, Rachel Sklar).
